The OLIS CLARiTY 620 CLARiTY UV/Vis spectrophotometer is our small scanning dual
beam absorbance spectrophotometer, optimized for microsecond kinetics such as flash
photolysis, but which is so stable and noise-free that it is ideal for lengthy thermal melts and
equilibrium studies, too. The unique "CLARiTY" chamber eliminates the effect of scatter and
thus allows accurate absorbance (and, with optional enhancements, fluorescence) spectroscopy
to be done on suspensions and solids, as well as solutions.
This modern digital optical bench provides high accuracy, high performance true dual beam
data with 16 bit precision to 500 kHz rates. The light source is a 75 watt xenon arc lamp, the
monochromator is the DeSa subtractive double grating monochromator with two 40 x 45 mm
gratings blazed to optimize the spectral range for the UV/Vis ~240-800 nm, and the sample
compartment is a dual beam CLARiTY Chamber.
Within the "CLARiTY" chamber are two thermostatted and stirred 'suspension presentation
cavities' (DSPC) each of which holds up to either 1 mL, 4 mL, or 9 mL of sample. The DSPCs
return effective pathlengths of 5, 20, or 30 centimeters, respectively. It is recommended that
one chose mismatched volumes, as there is no benefit to same sized ones and great value in
having the choice of two.
Ports are provided on four sides of the DSPCs to allow entrance and exit of excitation and
emission beams. Inlet ports through the top of the DSPC allow introduction of reactants into
the sample (and reference) manually or with the OLIS Automatic Titrator (quoted separately).
Temperature is controlled by a thermoelectric assembly under manual control; magnetic
stirring is built-in. Temperature range supported is from ambient to 40°C.
All electronics and the pair of high speed photomultiplier tubes are by Electronic Tubes and
OLIS. The provided computer hardware includes an OLIS verified and supported Dell
computer with (at least) an Intel i3 Series Processor 2.93 GHz. Features 1 GB RAM, a 250
GB SATA 7200 RPM hard drive with DVD-RW drive, ten USB ports, single RS 232 port, and
one parallel port, Windows 7, and high-resolution 17-inch monitor.
Software includes the OLIS SpectralWorks program for collecting, displaying, analyzing, and
storing/ retrieving data from the OLIS CLARiTY. Exclusive implementation of Matheson's
SVD, Downhill Simplex, and Matrix Exponentiation algorithms are provided for
instantaneously fast and precise 2D and 3D data fitting. Data storage/ retrieval and import/
export capabilities are provided for dealing with data acquired by this spectrophotometer, including direct read into Excel and JPG file production. Instrument dimensions are
approximately 15" x 36". First year warranty covers all hardware and software. An annually
renewable Warranty Extension is available for approximately 5% of the purchase price of the
